Identification of Critical Success Factors Affecting Project Duration Management

Abstract:

Critical success factors in time management are among the most important elements affecting projects, as dealing with and managing time is a key determinant of success or failure. Consequently, time management is one of the major challenges facing organizations. What distinguishes this study is that it examined the critical success factors identified in previous research, in addition to deriving new factors from the knowledge domain of project time management, and assessing the impact of each factor on project success, thereby contributing to the development of the project management body of knowledge. The sample consisted of contracting companies and consulting offices in Libya. Opinions of more than 120 individuals from the study population were surveyed. Based on statistical analysis using SPSS with a set of statistical and descriptive methods, the study reached several conclusions. Among the most important findings is the validity of the hypothesis supporting the claim that factors related to top management and the organization, project team characteristics, external influences, and project management are significant and impactful for project success. The results also confirmed the hypothesis that factors related to the planning and monitoring & control phases are crucial and influential in managing project duration. Furthermore, the study rejected the hypothesis that there are no statistically significant differences among all the main critical factors in terms of importance and influence.
